Monday, November 4, at 16:00.

The lecture will focus on a brief interpretation of the natural social need of the mind with respect to the teachings of 18th century thinkers. According to these thinkers, this need is provided by the human capacity for empathy, i.e. for empathizing with the experience of people in our environment. We will try to interpret three forms of this need - the basic need for contact with others, the need for closeness and sharing of experience, and the need for praise and recognition. We will interpret the third mentioned need with regard to the question of the need for factually justified pride (healthy self-esteem).
