Between Ressentiment and Forgiveness:
Transitional Justice in Rwanda and South Africa

How do traumatized people respond to egregious harm? Revenge killings are understandable,
but what if instead they set up tribunals to investigate the truth and grant amnesty to those who
have confessed to participating in committing outrageous atrocities? The global human rights
community applauded the successor regimes in South Africa and Rwanda for taking the high
moral road and involving lay persons in truth and reconciliation proceedings. My paper analyses
critically claims of restorative justice and epistemic oppression.
